There are few things I love more than a chocolate chip cookie. While I have several variations of this beloved cookie, such as my Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Chip Pecan Cookies, Coffee Cookies and Eggless Chocolate Chip Cookies, a classic chocolate chip cookie is still my hands down favorite. Imagine my delight that I can now mix and bake a batch of warm and buttery chocolate chip cookies in about 15 minutes in an air fryer.

Ingredients
This recipe for air fryer chocolate chip cookies requires only a handful of simple ingredients to make and you probably already have them in your pantry and fridge. Here’s what you’ll need.

- Wet Ingredients: Gather butter, light brown sugar, granulated sugar, an egg, , vanilla extract and chocolate chips.
Substitutions
Here are my recommended substitutions to make these air fried cookies if you need them.
- All purpose flour: Make these air fried chocolate chip cookies, gluten free, by using a good 1-1 gluten free flour. I recommend using the one from Bob’s Red Mill. Oat flour would also work well in this recipe. Make sure to measure the flour based on weight (180 g) versus cup for cup.
- Baking Soda and Baking Powder: Both are needed to get the classic texture of a chocolate chip cookie that is both chewy and soft.
- Unsalted Butter: Feel free to use your preferred butter. Use a plant based butter to make these cookies in an air fryer diary free.
- Granulated Sugar and Light Brown Sugars: Maple sugar would also work well to make these cookies refined sugar free.
- Egg: This recipe has not been tested without eggs.
- Vanilla Extract: This is more for background flavor and nicely enhances the flavors of the other ingredients.
- Chocolate Chips: Feel free to use any combination (or just one) kind of chocolate chips or bars to make these the best air fryer cookies for you!
Variations
- Melted Butter: To make these chocolate chip air fryer cookies with melted butter, simply melt the butter until most is melted. Some semi soft pieces are fine. Cool the butter in the fridge for 15 minutes. Mix all the wet ingredients together. Mix in the dry ingredients, followed by chocolate chips. Then chill the dough in the fridge for 30 minutes. Bake the cookies according to the air fryer cookies recipe.
- Store Bought Cookie Dough: Make sure the cookie dough is about the size of 2 tablespoons of cookie dough. Follow the directions in the recipe for how to cook cookies in the air fryer.
- Air Fryer Parchment Paper: Line the air fryer basket with a specialized parchment paper made for air fryer baskets. This is not needed, but is a nice addition if you would like to purchase some for your air fryer. Just make sure the parchment paper has holes in it to ensure the cookies fry properly.
How To Make
Learn how to make chocolate chip cookies in an air fryer in a few easy steps.
- In a mixing bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt until well combined. Set aside for now.
- In a large mixing bowl fitted with paddle attachment, cream the butter with the light brown and granulated sugars on medium speed for 2 - 3 minutes until light and well combined. On low mix in the egg and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet until just combined. I like to do this about ½ of the dry ingredients at a time. Fold in most of the chocolate chips. Reserve ab0ut ¼ cup (85 g) for topping the cookies right before baking or in this case, air frying. Set the cookie dough aside or cover and place in the fridge while you prepare the parchment paper for the air fryer.
- Cut (16) 2.5 inch squares of parchment paper, one for each chocolate chip cookie dough ball. If you have parchment paper designed for air frying, you can skip this. Make sure the parchment paper has holes in it. Otherwise, I recommend cutting the parchment paper squares. Scoop about 2 tablespoons of cookie dough onto each square of parchment paper. Top with the reserved chocolate chips. Place about 4 - 6 cookie dough balls into a cold air fryer basket. Do not preheat the air fryer.
- Set the air fryer to 300 F (160 C). Bake for 6 - 8 minutes or until your preferred doneness. 6 minutes gives a slightly underbaked cookie that’s lightly toasted on the outside. 8 minutes gives a soft and slightly chewy cookie with a more toasted exterior. Cool the chocolate chip cookies inside the air fryer (turned off) for 5 minutes. Then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely to room temperature and enjoy! I recommend using a spatula to scoop under the parchment paper rather than scooping under the cookie itself.
How To Store, Freeze and Thaw
- Store: Place chocolate chip cookies in an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you would like to store the cookies for longer, I recommend freezing them.
- Freeze Dough: Prepare the air fryer cookies through the scooping step. Freeze the cookie balls for 20 minutes then transfer them to a freezer proof container for up to 2 months.
- Thaw the cookie dough balls in the fridge overnight, set out at room temperature for 20 - 30 minutes and proceed with the cookie recipe as written starting with baking.
- Freeze Baked Cookies: Once the cookies have cooled to room temperature transfer them to a freezer proof container in a single lined with parchment paper between each layer. Freeze for up to one month.
- Thaw Baked Cookies: Let the small batch air fryer cookies sit out at room temperature until thawed. I like to heat them in the microwave for 20 - 30 seconds to get that “fresh from the oven” taste.
M’s Expert Tips
- Measure the flour properly. I highly recommend using a food scale to get perfectly measured ingredients every time.
- Don’t overmix the batter. Make sure to mix the dry ingredients into the wet until just combined.
- Top with more chocolate chips. Reserve some chocolate chips for topping the cookies right before air frying.
- Make a test batch. Every air fryer is different, so the frying time listed in the recipe may be slightly different for your air fryer. After a few rounds of testing, I found 300 F (160 F) to be a good temperature for a soft and chewy cookie with crisp edges.
- Make sure there is good air flow. In order for the cookies to bake properly in the air fryer, it is important for the air inside the air fryer to move freely. Make sure to use parchment liners designed for air frying (with holes) or use the suggested parchment paper squares.
- Do not preheat the air fryer with parchment paper inside. Without the weight of the cookie dough on the parchment paper, the circulating air can cause the parchment paper to fly up into the heating element and potentially catch fire.
FAQs
Yes, foil works just fine in the air fryer. I recommend cutting squares for each individual cookie dough ball to bake on rather than lining the entire basket with foil.
Yes, it is possible to make almost any cookie in the air fryer. I suggest sticking with a cookie that you prefer to have a chewy interior and toasted exterior.
No, the cooling time is important to help set the cookie. If you skip the cooling time, most likely the bottom of the cookie will come apart from the rest of the cookie and you will end up with a delicious mess.
