Why Should You Make This Recipe

I absolutely love air fryer recipes. A few of my favorites from the blog are my Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies, Air Fryer Donuts, Air Fryer Apples and Air Fryer Pineapple.  I am so excited to add these delicious and incredibly easy to make air fryer biscuits to the mix!

  • They have the perfect flaky, fluffy texture.  Thanks to the flaky layers of homemade or canned buttermilk biscuit dough and the air fryer method of baking, these buttermilk biscuits bake up with toasty golden exterior and tender, fluffy interiors.
  • Easy to make with simple ingredients.  What I love most about this air fryer donuts with biscuits recipe is that it only requires 6 simple ingredients for a homemade version. Make deliciously fried biscuits using premade biscuit dough and an air fryer or the easy to make homemade buttermilk biscuit recipe.

This air fryer biscuit recipe requires a few simple ingredients to make. Here’s what you’ll need.

Gather all purpose flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, cold butter and buttermilk. Alternatively store bought canned buttermilk biscuits.

Substitutions

Here are my recommended substitutions to make this air fried biscuits recipe in case you need to swap an ingredient or two.

  • Canned Biscuit Dough: Make sure to choose a kind made from buttermilk and one that also advertises “flaky” layer for these biscuits in the air fryer. I love using Grands Biscuits.
  • All Purpose Flour: Feel free to use your preferred all purpose flour. For the lightest, flakiest biscuits, I recommend White Lilly Flour.
  • Baking Powder: This acts as a leaving agent in the biscuits. This recipe hasn’t been tested with baking soda.
  • Butter: Vegan or dairy free butter can be used if needed.
  • Buttermilk: Use a full fat buttermilk for the best air fryer biscuits. I recommend using regular buttermilk versus a DIY buttermilk for tender and flaky biscuits. If needed, a DIY buttermilk can be made using a full fat milk of your choice. Pour 2 teaspoons lemon juice or vinegar into a measuring cup topped with milk up tp ¾ cup.

Variations

  • Oven Baked Biscuits: Prepare the biscuit recipe as written. Place the biscuits onto a lined baking sheet and bake at 425 F for 14 - 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Self Rising Flour: Use 2 cups (240 g) self rising flour in place of the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.
  • Pillsbury Biscuits: Make this as a 1 ingredient air fry biscuit recipe by using store bought canned biscuit dough. Air fry  2 - 6 biscuits, evenly spaced about at 375 F (190 C) for 8 - 12 minutes.

How To Make

Learn how to make air fryer biscuits in a few easy steps.

  1. Pulse the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a food processor until well combined. If using a bowl, whisk the dry ingredients together until well combined. Once the dry ingredients are mixed together pulse in evenly cubed pieces of cold butter until well combined with pea sized pieces of butter. Alternatively use a pastry cutter to ct the butter into the dry ingredients.
  2. Remove the blade from the food processor. Pour the cold buttermilk into the food processor. Mix the dry ingredients with the buttermilk until just combined. If needed, transfer the dry ingredients into a bowl and then mix in the cold buttermilk.
  1. Turn out the buttermilk biscuit dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gather the dough into a 1 ½ inch thick disk if making round biscuits or rectangle if making square biscuits. Fold the dough in half or thirds. Gently press the dough back into the same 1 ½ inch disk or rectangle. Repeat once more. Cut the dough into rounds using a 2 inch biscuit butter dipped in flour. The dough should yield 6 - 8 biscuits. Transfer the cut biscuits to a small lined baking sheet or large plate. Chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.
  2. Preheat the air fryer to 375 (190 C). Spray the basket of the air fryer with non stick spray. Place 4 chilled biscuits about 2 inches apart into the preheated, lightly greased air fryer. Fry for 8 - 12 minutes or until golden brown on the top.
Melt 1 - 2 tablespoons of butter in a small bowl. Brush the tops of the air baked biscuits with the melted butter and serve.

How To Serve, Store, Freeze and Thaw

  • Serve: These air fryer biscuits are delicious with any breakfast foods such as eggs, Amish breakfast casserole, or with maple butter.
  • Store: Enjoy these fried biscuits beyond the day they are made by storing them in an airtight container at  room temperature for up to 2 days. After the first day, the biscuits will start to dry out and won’t taste as good.
  • Freeze: Wrap each air baked biscuit in plastic wrap. Place the biscuits om an airtight, freezer proof container in the freezer for up to 2 months.
  • Thaw: Set the frozen biscuits out at room temperature for a few hours. Once they are fully defrosted, reheat them in the air fryer at 350 F (177 C) for about 2 - 3 minutes.

M’s Expert Tips

  • Use cold ingredients. Colder butter and cold buttermilk creates higher and flakier biscuits. Chilling the biscuits for about 15 minutes prior to air frying also helps the biscuits archive a tender, flaky texture.
  • Use full fat ingredients. Fat equals flavor and the most tender, flaky and fluffy texture.
  • If using canned biscuits, use buttermilk biscuits. Canned buttermilk biscuits, specifically ones that have “flaky” layers fry the best.
  • Make a test batch. Every air fryer is different, so the frying time listed in the recipe may be slightly different for your air fryer. Start with 1 - 2 biscuits and determine what frying time works best for you.
