Substitutions
This simple maple spread is meant to be quick and easy, but sometimes you may not have everything on hand. If you need them, here are my recommended substitutions for this recipe:
- Unsalted Butter: Use a good quality butter for the tastiest results. I love using Kerry Gold. Feel free to use salted butter or a plant based butter. If using salted, omit the added salt.
- Ground Cinnamon: The warm, sweet and spicy flavor of cinnamon pairs well maple. Feel free to omit the cinnamon or use a spice blend like pumpkin or apple pie.
- Maple Syrup: I love using organic maple syrup from Vermont, New York or Canada. For a sugar free alternative try Lakanto. Keep in mind that the darker the maple syrup, the more maple flavor. Look for words such as “Amber, Dark, Grade B, or Robust” fro the best flavor of maple syrup.

M’s Expert Tips
- Use room temperature butter. Room temperature butter is soft and slightly cool to the touch. Press a finger into the center of the butter. Your finger should easily leave an imprint without sliding off the side.
- Use real maple syrup. Do not use maple flavored syrup. Look for words such as “dark, amber, grade B or robust” for the best tasting maple syrup.
- Taste and adjust the flavor as needed. Everyone has a different preference for salty and sweet. Start off by adding the ingredient amounts listed in the recipe. If needed add more salt or maple syrup for your personal preference and tastes.
