Gather water, rice, milk, sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and vanilla extract.
Substitutions
This rice pudding with condensed milk recipe is as easy to make as it is delicious. Here are my recommended substitutions if you need them.
- Water: This is needed to boil the rice.
- Rice: Any type of short or medium grain rice works well. For this sweetened condensed milk rice pudding I used white rice. Jasmine, Basmati, Arborio or white rice can be used to make sweetened milk rice pudding. Avoid quick cooking rice.
- Whole Milk: The creamiest rice pudding uses full fat ingredients. Feel free to use your preferred type of milk.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk: Condensed milk is the same as sweetened condensed milk. If needed, use evaporated milk and add 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar.
- Ground Cinnamon and Nutmeg: Both warming spices are the perfect complement to the creamy rice pudding. Feel free to swap the cinnamon and nutmeg with up to 1 teaspoon of your favorite ground spices.
- Salt: A pinch of salt elevates the other flavors of this sweet milk pudding.
- Vanilla Extract: This gives a lovely flavor boost to the sweet milky rice pudding.

Variation
Chocolate Rice Pudding with Condensed Milk: Sift ? cup unsweetened or Dutch processed cocoa powder into the rice pudding at the same time as the milk, condensed milk and spices.
How To Make
Learn how to make rice pudding with condensed milk in a few easy steps.

- Add water and rice to a large sauce pan or heavy bottom pot. Bring the rice and water to a boil over medium high heat. Once the water and rice starts to boil, cover the pot or sauce pan, reduce the temperature to low and simmer for about 10 minutes.
- After the 10 minutes is up, uncover the sauce pan. Stir in the milk, condensed milk, ground cinnamon and nutmeg and salt. Stir well to combine all the ingredients together. Increase the temperature to medium and continue to cook the rice pudding for about 15 - 20 minutes or until thickened and creamy.

3. Remove the condensed milk rice pudding from the heat. Stir the vanilla extract into the hot rice pudding. Scoop the rice pudding into a serving dish or bowl. If you would like, dust the rice pudding with more cinnamon or top with nuts or fruit and enjoy.
How To Store, Freeze, Thaw and Reheat
- Store: Fully cool the condensed milk rice pudding. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Freeze: Fully cool the cooked rice pudding with sweetened condensed milk. Transfer the rice pudding to an airtight and freezer safe container. Store in the freezer for up to 2 months.
- Thaw and Reheat: Transfer the frozen rice pudding to thaw in the fridge overnight. Warm the thawed rice pudding by reheating it in the microwave. Top with your preferred toppings and enjoy.

M’s Expert Tips
- Allow time to make the rice pudding. Although this recipe is very easy, it does take about 30 minutes to make.
- Add the warming spices during the cooking process. A dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg on the finished sweetened condensed milk pudding adds a nice finishing touch, but the flavor is more pronounced when the apices are adding during the cooking process.
- Stir the creamy rice pudding frequently. It’s easy for the rice or milk to begin to stick to the bottom of the pan. Stirring often ensures all the ingredients cook evenly and remain creamy.
- Top the warm bread pudding with your favorite toppings. Although this rich sweetened milk rice pudding dish tastes amazing without toppings, I love topping mine with a dusting of cinnamon. If you prefer a more traditional rice pudding, you can add raisins or even chopped nuts.
