Why Should You Make This Recipe

I have several fun chocolate covered recipes on the blog. My personal favorites at the moment are my Chocolate Covered Dates, Chocolate Covered Blueberries, Chocolate Covered Pineapple, White Chocolate Covered Strawberries, Chocolate Covered Graham Crackers, Chocolate Covered Popcorn and Chocolate Covered Rice Krispie Treats. These chocolate apples are another fun and easy treat I know you’ll love!

  • They are quick, easy and fun to make. These chocolate dipped apples are made using 2 ingredients you probably already have in your fridge or pantry. They take about 5 minutes to make and 15 - 20 minutes to set.
  • They’re a delicious and healthy no bake treat. Chocolate apples are so simple to make and result in a beautiful and endlessly adaptable dessert, snack or kid friendly treat.

Ingredients

To make these fresh apples covered in chocolate, make sure you have these 2 ingredients ready to go.

Gather fresh apples and chocolate. If you’d like to top the chocolate apple slices with nuts, candy or coconut flakes, make sure to grab that too.

Substitutions

If you need them, here are my recommended substitutions for these blueberries and chocolate treat.

  • Apples: Feel free to use your favorite apples. I love granny smith apples for this recipe.
  • Dark Chocolate: I love the taste of dark chocolate with the tart and sweet flavor of apples. Milk chocolate and dark chocolate candy melts are good alternatives. If you love white chocolate, feel free to use that instead.
  • Coconut Oil: This is strictly for appearance and very optional. Adding a teaspoon or two to chocolate gives it a smooth and glossy shine after it cools and hardens. Feel free to skip this ingredient if you like.

Variations

  • Frozen Chocolate Covered Apples: This version is made with yogurt. Mix ½  cup yogurt with 2 - 3 tablespoons peanut butter. Dip apple slices into the yogurt, coating both sides. Freeze for 30 - 45 minutes or until the yogurt is set. Dip the frozen yogurt covered apples in the melted chocolate. Top the apples with any of your desired toppings. Return the frozen chocolate and apple slices to the freezer another 1- 2 hours to set and enjoy.
  • Chocolate and Caramel Covered Apples: Prepare the apples according to the recipe directions. Chill the apples to set the chocolate. While the chocolate is chilling, make a quick caramel sauce. Melt 8 oz. soft caramel candies with 2 tablespoons heavy cream in the microwave in 20 second increments until fully melted. Drizzle on the chilled chocolate covered apples and top with any of your preferred toppings.
  • Suggested Toppings: Mini M&M’s, mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts such as peanuts and coconut flakes are perfect to top these chocolate apples.

How To Make

Learn how to make chocolate covered apples in two easy steps.

  1. Line a sheet pan with wax paper and set aside for now. Wash and dry 2 medium apples. Using a sharp knife, slice the apples starting at the top, through to the bottom. Each medium apples should yield about 4 - 5 slices. Use a spoon or small mellon baller to remove any seeds or fibrous core. Insert a food grade popsicle stick half way up the inside of the apple slice. The popsicle is optional. Apples can also be eaten in slices without sticks, in wedges on popsicle sticks or in wedges without sticks.
  2. Pour the dark, milk or white chocolate and coconut oil (if using) into a large microwave safe bowl. Heat in 30 second increments in the microwave until the chocolate is fully melted. Stir the chocolate in between each increment. Dip each of the apple slices into the melted chocolate until both sides are coated in the melted chocolate. Place the chocolate coated apple slice onto the prepared baking sheet. Top with your preferred toppings. Chill the dipped apples in the fridge for 1 - 2 hours or in the freezer for about 30 - 45 minutes.

How To Store

Store: Transfer leftover chocolate covered apples to an airtight container in the the fridge for up one 3 - 4 days. I do not recommend freezing and thawing the apples.

M’s Expert Tips

  • Wash and fully dry the apples. Make sure all parts of the apples are dry before dipping or coating them into the melted chocolate.
  • Dry both sides of the apple right before dipping into the chocolate. Press both sides of the apple on a paper towel right dipping into the chocolate. If the apples are wet, the chocolate may not stick.
  • Stir the chocolate frequently. This prevents the milk, dark or white chocolate from burning and also promotes even melting. Be careful not to heat the chocolate too much. It should be warm touch.
  • Setting the chocolate covered apples. Place them on parchment paper or wax paper. Transfer to the fridge or freezer to set them faster. They will eventually dry at room temperature, but it does take longer.

FAQs

How long will chocolate covered apples last?

When stored in the fridge, the chocolate dipped apples last about 3 - 4 days in the fridge.

Why is chocolate not sticking to my apples?

This can happen if the apples are still wet or if there is a bit too much wax on the outside of the apples. Make sure to clean and dry the apples well.

Do you use wax or parchment paper to set chocolate covered apples?

Wax paper is the best surface to dry chocolate covered fruits, nuts, crackers, etc.
