Substitutions
If you need them, here are my recommended substitutions for these blueberries and chocolate treat.
- Blueberries: Feel free to use fresh or freeze dried strawberries. I like to use smaller blueberries as I find they are typically more tart and sweet than the bigger ones. If fresh blueberries aren’t in season or don’t taste very good, freeze dried blueberries are perfect for this recipe.
- Dark Chocolate: I love the taste of dark chocolate with the tart and sweet flavor of blueberries. Milk chocolate and dark chocolate candy melts are good alternatives. If you love white chocolate, feel free to use that instead.
- Coconut Oil: This is strictly for appearance. Adding a teaspoon or two to chocolate gives it a smooth and glossy shine after it cools and hardens. Feel free to skip this ingredient if you like.
Variations
- Frozen Chocolate Covered Blueberries: This version is made with yogurt. Mix 2 cups fresh blueberries with 1 cup yogurt. Scoop clusters onto a lined baking sheet. Freeze for 20 - 30 minutes. Top the frozen blueberry clusters with melted chocolate and chopped nuts or granola. Return the frozen chocolate and blueberry clusters to the freezer for 15 minutes to set and enjoy.
- Lemon or Lime Zest: Prepare the fresh or freeze dried blueberries and chocolate as written in the recipe. After scooping into chocolate covered berry clusters, zest lemon or lime on top. Chill to set and enjoy.
- Muffin Pan Clusters: Line a 12 count muffin pan with cupcake liners. Prepare the chocolate and blueberries as written in the recipe. Scoop even clusters of melted chocolate coated blueberries into each of the cupcake liners.

Fresh Chocolate Blueberries
- Wash and pat dry the fresh blueberries. Pour the dark or milk chocolate into a large microwave safe bowl. Heat in 30 second increments in the microwave until the chocolate is fully melted. Stir the chocolate in between each increment. Once the chocolate has melted pour the clean and dried blueberries into the melted chocolate.
- Gently mix the berries in the chocolate until all the berries are fully coated in the melted dark or milk chocolate. Use a small, tablespoon sized cookie scoop or spoon to transfer clusters of chocolate covered blueberries onto a lined baking sheet or plate. If you prefer to have individual blueberries coated in chocolate, simply scoop one berry at a time onto a line baking sheet or plate.
Freeze Dried Chocolate Blueberries

Open the package of freeze dried blueberries. Remove the silica packet (this absorbs moisture and keeps the freeze dried berries crisp). Once the chocolate has melted pour the freeze dried blueberries into the melted chocolate.

3. Transfer the chocolate covered blueberry clusters to the fridge or freezer to set. The blueberry chocolates need about 15 minutes to set in the freezer and 30 minutes to set in the fridge.
How To Store
Store: Transfer leftover chocolate covered blueberries to an airtight container in the the fridge for up one 3 - 4 days for fresh berries and 1 week for freeze dried berries.
M’s Expert Tips
- Wash and fully dry the fresh blueberries. Make sure all parts of the berry are dry before dipping or coating them into the melted chocolate.
- Stir the chocolate frequently. This prevents the milk, dark or white chocolate from burning and also promotes even melting. Be careful not to heat the chocolate too much. It should be warm touch.
- Set the white chocolate covered blueberries on parchment paper or wax paper. Transfer to the fridge or freezer to set them faster. They will eventually dry at room temperature, but it does take longer.
