Substitutions
This simple Oreo dessert is meant to be quick and easy, but sometimes you may not have everything on hand. If you need them, here are my recommended substitutions for this recipe:
- Cream Cheese: Mascarpone cheese would be the easiest substitute for cream cheese.
- Heavy Cream: This is used to make the whipped cream. I prefer making my own, but feel free to use store bought whipped cream or cool whip.
- Powdered Sugar: Maple sugar would be good refined sugar free substitute. Granulated sugar will also work well in this mug cake.
- Vanilla Extract: This provides a nice background flavor to the dip. Feel free to omit if you don’t have any on hand.
- Oreo Cookies: This dip recipe uses the classic Oreo chocolate sandwich cookie. However, any brand of chocolate and cream sandwich cookies will work for this recipe. You can also use any flavor sandwich cookie you like.
How To Make
Let me show you how to make this cookies and cream dip in a few easy steps. Grab your ingredients and let’s go!
- Grab a large mixing bowl and an electric hand mixer or just use your stand mixer with whisk attachment. Whisk the heavy cream on medium speed until medium-stiff peaks form. This takes about 5-7 minutes. Be careful not to overmix or you’ll end up with butter. Set this bowl aside.
- In another large mixing bowl, add the room temperature cream cheese. Beat the cream cheese on low speed until smooth. Beat in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract on low speed until smooth and well combined.
- Fold the whipped cream or cool whip into the sweetened cream cheese mixture. I like to do this in 2-3 batches to ensure the whipped cream is evenly mixed in. Fold in the coarsely chopped Oreo cookies.
4. Transfer the Oreo dessert dip into a serving bowl. Top with a finely crushed Oreo cookie and serve with fresh fruit, pretzels or more cookies!
How To Serve and Store
Serve this cookie dip with fresh fruit such as strawberries or apples, salty dippers such as pretzels or even more cookies such as Nilla Wafers! Make sure to set this dip out at room temperature for a few minutes to softened a bit before serving.
Store leftover cookies and cream dip: This cookie dip recipe stores well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. If not serving this creamy dip right away, transfer it to the fridge until it’s time to serve.
M’s Expert Tips
- Make the whipped cream with cold heavy cream. The heavy cream needs to be cold in order to whip properly. Alternatively, you can also use store bought Cool Whip.
- Bring the cream cheese to room temperature. This allows the ingredients to mix together more evenly and lessens the chance of the cream cheese splitting.
- Coarsely chop the Oreo cookies. This dip looks and tastes the best when the Oreo cookies are chopped into slightly larger pieces.
