Substitutions
This simple mug cake is meant to be quick and easy, but sometimes you may not have everything on hand. If you need them, here are my recommended substitutions for this recipe:
- Oreo Cookies: This mug cake recipe uses the classic Oreo chocolate sandwich cookie. However, any brand of chocolate and cream sandwich cookies will work for this recipe. You can also use any flavor sandwich cookie you like.
- Butter: I like to use unsalted “sweet cream” butter in almost all my baking recipes. This is the most common and widely available butter in the US. If needed, use salted butter or a diary free butter you like.
- Granulated Sugar: Maple sugar would be good refined sugar free substitute. Light brown sugar will also work well in this mug cake.
- Cocoa Powder: Any type of unsweetened cocoa powder will work well in this fudgy brownie recipe. However, I love using dutch process cocoa powder for its mellow, but intensely chocolate flavor.
- Milk: Any type of milk will work well in this recipe.
- Baking Powder: This provides some lift and makes the mug cake more cake like.
Variations
TikTok 2 ingredient Oreo mug cake:
- Combine 4 finely crushed Oreo cookies with 3 tablespoons milk. Mix until well combined.
- Heat in the microwave for 1 minute. Top with whipped cream and crushed Oreo cookies.
Toppings: For even more flavorful mug cake, top it with any of these suggested toppings: Mini peanut butter cups, chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, sprinkles, crushed pretzels or roughly chopped Oreo cookies.
How To Make
Let me show you how to make Oreo mug cake in a few easy steps. Grab your ingredients and let’s go!
- Grab your favorite mug. It should hold at least 8 oz. (237 ml) of liquid. Melt one tablespoon of butter in the mug. This takes about 20-30 seconds in the microwave. Whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar until well combined.
- Whisk in the crushed Oreo cookies, flour and baking powder until combined. The mixture may look grainy and dry. Don’t worry! Mix in the milk until well combined. The mixture will look like a thick cake or brownie batter.
- Microwave the mug cake in the microwave for 1 minute. The mixture should puff up and resemble cake. If there is any liquid at the bottom, heat the mug cake in the microwave for an additional 15 seconds. Top with freshly whipped cream and more crushed Oreos.
How To Serve and Store
Serve this warm from the microwave Oreo mug cake with freshly whipped cream and more crushed oreos. Mini chocolate chips or even mini peanut butter cups would also be amazing!
Store leftover Oreo cake in a mug: This mug cake recipe is designed to be single serve and to be eaten as soon as it is made. I do not recommend storing this Oreo mug cake as the texture changes over time. Aka, it tastes so much better right after it is made.
M’s Expert Tips
- Finely crush the Oreo cookies. This makes the texture and consistency of the mug cake batter more like cake.
- Mix the ingredients well. The Oreo batter should be similar to a thick cake or brownie batter.
- Check the wattage on your microwave. If your microwave is below 1100 watts, you may need to add 15 seconds. If your microwave is above 1100 watts, you may need to start at 45 seconds and add 15 more seconds as needed.
- Top with your favorite toppings. My favorite way to enjoy a mug cake is with a scoop of freshly whipped cream or ice cream. I love the contrast of the hot mug cake and cold cream toppings.
FAQs

You can double the recipe, but use two mugs and microwave them separately. It’s such a quick and easy recipe, that you can still have a fabulous dessert in no time.
This can happen when a cake has been overcooked. If this happens, try starting at 30 - 45 seconds. Add 15 seconds more until the microwave Oreo cake is the right texture.
Unfortunately, water doesn’t have the same richness and creaminess as milk. For the best taste, make this mug cake with milk.
