Why Should You Make This Recipe

I have several fun and creative marshmallow treat recipes on the blog. My personal favorites at the moment are my Chocolate Rice Krispies, Maple Tahini Rice Krispie Treats, Chocolate Covered Rice Krispie Treats and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Bars. These fruity pebble rice crispy treats are another fun twist on the nostalgic no bake marshmallow bars you know and love. I know you’ll love this colorful version because:

  • They are quick, easy and fun to make. There’s nothing better than satisfying a dessert or snack craving as soon as possible with ingredients you already have on hand. These fruity marshmallow krispies are made using 3 ingredients (or 5 if you count the salt and vanilla extract) and take only 10 minutes to assemble.
  • You love fun and colorful twists on nostalgic childhood treats. These pebble marshmallow treats are exactly the same as the beloved and iconic rice krispie treats, just more colorful! It’s a fun and endlessly adaptable variation that’s perfect for any holiday.
  • They’re a delicious no bake dessert. These marshmallow filled no bake bars make a great grab and go snack or easy dessert that both kids and adults will absolutely adore.

Ingredients

This Fruity Pebbles treats recipe requires only a handful of ingredients to make and you probably already have them in your house. Before I show you have to make rice crispy treats with fruity pebbles, make sure you have these ingredients ready to go!

Fruity Pebbles Treats ingredients: min marshmallows, fruity pebbles cereal, butter, vanilla extract and salt.

The main ingredients for this fruity pebbles dessert are Fruity Pebbles rice cereal, mini marshmallows, butter, vanilla extract and salt.

Ingredient Substitutions

These Fruity Pebbles bars are meant to be quick and easy, but sometimes you may not have everything on hand. If you need them, here are my recommended substitutions to make these fruity treats:

  • Unsalted Butter: You can use the same amount of salted butter as written in the recipe. Just omit the  ½ teaspoon salt added.
  • Fruity Pebbles cereal: Although I adbsolutely adore Fruity Pebbles for this recipe, feel free to use any colorful rice cereal you like.
  • Vanilla extract: This adds a lovely background flavor to the marshmallow treats. It’s highly recommended to use this, but it can be omitted if needed.
  • Mini Marshmallows: This recipe for fruity pebbles treats uses exactly one 10 oz. bag of mini marshmallows. Feel free to use regular marshmallows if needed.

How To Make

These Fruity Pebble Bars are made in as little as 10 minutes with just 3 ingredients (or up to 5 ingredients). Here’s how to make them:

How to Make Fruity Pebbles Treats: Brown the butter, melt the marshmallows, stir in the vanilla extract, salt and pebbles rice cereal.
  1. In a large sauce pan or pot, melt the butter on low heat. To turn this into brown butter, allow the melted butter to begin to foam. Once it starts to foam whisk or stir the liquid butter frequently. The butter will begin to smell nutty and very fragrant. Once the foam has subsided, the butter should have some brown, lightly toasted bits floating at the bottom.
  2. Once all the butter has melted (or browned), add in almost all of the mini marshmallows. Reserve 1 cup for mixing in at the very end. Stir continuously over low heat until the marshmallows are mostly melted.
  3. Once the marshmallows are mostly melted remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Pour all 5 cups fruity pebbles cereal into the pot. Quickly and carefully stir in the cereal.
  1. Stir the pebbles cereal in the gooey melted marshmallows until all the cereal pieces are fully coated. Gently stir in the reserved 1 cup (1.7 oz) mini marshmallows.
  2. Evenly scoop the soft and gooey mixture into a lined 8 x 8 pan. Gently press the fruity pebble rice crispy treats into place.
  3. Allow the Fruity Pebble bars to set for at least 30 minutes. Slice and enjoy.

How To Store

To store leftover marshmallow treats: These fruity pebbles snacks store well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

M’s Expert Tips

  • Gently melt the marshmallows in the butter over medium - low heat. Stir frequently and just until the marshmallows and butter form a smooth mixture. Avoid the temptation to over mix or rush this process. Doing so can create hard marshmallow treats.
  • Don’t overmix the mini marshmallows. This is the last step after mixing in the cereal and vanilla extract. Fold in the mini marshmallows, but try not to press or overmix them.
  • Lightly grease the pan with cooking spray or butter before transferring cereal and marshmallow mixture into the pan. Press the mixture gently into the pan. This needs to be just enough to get them to stick together.
  • Lightly grease your hands or use a piece of parchment paper to press the bars into the pan. The fruity pebble bars are very gooey and sticky.

FAQ's

Can I use marshmallow fluff, marshmallow creme or marshmallow cream?

Technically yes, but the texture will be very different. If you opt to use marshmallow creme, the fruity pebbles marshmallow treats will come apart very easily and the overall texture won’t be as gooey as traditional Rice Krispie Treats.

Can I make my Fruity Pebbles Treats set faster?

To set rice krispie treats faster, cool them in the fridge (in the pan) for 30 minutes.

Why are my fruity pebbles treats hard as a rock?

This typically happens when the marshmallows are melted quickly over high heat or when left on the heat source too long. Melt the marshmallows low, slow and only as long as needed for the marshmallows to fully melt.

Can you make Fruity Pebbles Rice Krispie Treats the day before?

These colorful marshmallow bars are best enjoyed the day they are made. However, if they are made in advance (no more than a day before), fully cover the pan with plastic wrap to prevent air from drying out the treats. Cut the fruity pebble bars right before serving.
